Ever been to a chiropractor?
If so, you’ve probably heard of the term “adjustments” because chiropractors treat spinal misalignment with adjustments.
| An adjustment is gentle, specific pressure delivered to a spinal misalignment to optimize function of the spinal cord and entire nervous system. During an adjustment, the chiropractor applies gentle yet specific pressure to the vertebra.
Spinal joints that aren’t moving correctly can choke or irritate nearby nerves. Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these joints, reducing nervous system disruption. Once proper spinal structure is restored, health returns. Most patients report a sense of well-being and ease aft an adjustment. Because the adjustments are pleasant and tailored to each patient, people find it easy to return for the multiple visits needed to retrain their spine! |
What will an adjustment feel like?
| Dr Chris will adjust your spine by hand or with a little device called in activator. You will rest on a specially designed adjusting table while he applies gentle pressure specific to misaligned vertebra using specialized techniques. During your adjustment, your joint is moved past its passive range of motion but not past its anatomical limit. In fact, Doctors of Chiropractic are trained in making adjustments feel comfortable.
In cases of recent trauma or severe symptoms, there can be some discomfort due to inflammation. In cases of inflammation, there is sometimes mild soreness in the muscles after the first 1-2 adjustments. This is a similar feeling as if you just started a new workout program. Muscles and ligaments sometimes can be sore while they are acclimating to the adjustment. Proper application of ice after the treatment helps to minimize this effect. Normally the adjustment not only is painless, but also can provide immediate relief. Different people have different reactions depending on their condition, the amount of time the condition has existed and the person’s degree of sensitivity. |
Can you give yourself an adjustment?
| You can make their joints “pop,” but that’s not an adjustment. You are applying a nonspecific pressure to nonspecific, hyper-mobile joints. You may be incurring damage by mobilizing a joint with weakened muscles and ligaments. Chiropractic adjustments are SPECIFIC to locked up, non-moving joints. |
How many visits will you need?
| At our office, the number of adjustments vary with each patient and their individual goals. Many patients sense progress within two to four weeks of frequent visits. In general, the more chronic a condition, the longer it will take to recover, sometimes months or years depending on the amount of existing spinal damage. |
Do adjustments produce cracking sounds?
| The audible “pop” that you may or may not hear during an adjustment is the consequence of gasses being released within joint fluid. Not everyone experiences this and hearing the sound is not indication or required of an effective adjustment.
Since you are unique, each treatment and each adjustment is unique as well. Patient age, size and individual spinal problems determine the adjustment technique. Dr. Chris has various techniques to use to meet to meet your individual needs and that of each patient. |
| Newborns, infants, children, seniors and even back surgery patients can get adjusted. Naturally, adjustments are tailored to your size, age and particular health issue. |
